Wedding Planning: Top Songs of 2007

Having Trouble Deciding what songs to request at your wedding?

Here is a list of the top requested songs of 2007 courtesy of Mobile Beat and DJ Intelligence.

Mobile Beat is a magazine for Mobile Disc Jockeys and they organize a yearly conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

DJ Intelligence is a service that a lot of DJ’s use to keep track of their customers. If you have seen the “Check availability” forms such as the one on DJs of Houston, than you know what I am talking about. There is a section in that long form that allows you to request your favorite songs, or the songs that you want played at your reception. Well that list is saved to a central databased, ran by DJ Intelligence, and at the end of the year they created this list. So you know that these songs were requested to Professional DJ Companies by Brides and Grooms like you.

1 Ac/Dc You Shook Me All Night Long
2 Timberlake, Justin Sexyback
3 B-52′s Love Shack
4 Morrison, Van Brown Eyed Girl
5 Def Leppard Pour Some Sugar On Me
6 Abba Dancing Queen
7 Lynyrd Skynyrd Sweet Home Alabama
8 Sister Sledge We Are Family
9 Clapton, Eric Wonderful Tonight

Quinceanera Songs: August 2007

This month I have my first Quinceañera of the month on Friday, August the 3rd. It will be in the east side of Houston in a Beautiful Venue. Of course I will be the DJ for that Quinceañera and I’ve talked to the Parents and the Quinceañera. The parents are a traditional Mexican Couple in their 40′s and this is going to be their very first Quinceañera they plan, so I was able to give them a lot of advice in making it flow smoothly.

I went with them last Saturday to the Wedding of mutual friends and they did not like the way the Wedding Reception flowed. The arrival of the guests was at 6:00pm, the dinner started at 6:30pm and was over at 7:30pm where normally, in a Hispanic Wedding, I would start the toast, the cutting of the cake and then do their first Dance, Parents Dances and a Special first dance for the family and guests. It looked like the DJ did not know what was going on, and worse it looked like he expected the Bride and Groom to tell him what to do, so at about 8:30pm the Bride and Groom were behind the DJ booth going over how they wanted things to happen. (????!!!!???) Not the place to do it, it took them nearly an Hour to figure out what was going on and by 9:30pm, all the formalities began. This of course was the DJ provided by the facility. It was easy for the parents of the Quinceañera to tell me what they wanted: To not have to go through all that at their event. It was horrible, the guests were complaining about how long it took to start dancing, some left before the first dance, and really it felt like nobody knew what was going on or what was next. I mean you tell me, who’s job is it to make sure things run smoothly and are completely organized and pre-planned???

Well, we discussed the planning and in about 1 hour, we had a completely planned Quinceañera Reception to their specific liking and even worked with the Choreographer to make the transitions run smoothly. I guess that is the difference between a Professional DJ, he just takes extra time to prepare, plan, and organize the Reception. Which is what I love to do.

So we discussed some of the songs that they wanted at their event.

Quinceañera Songs: Parents

They wanted music to cater to their adult guests, music like Cumbias, Norteñas, Merengue, Mexican Tejano. Some of the Names of some songs they mentioned were:

Tejano Music

Tejano Music, what ever happened to it?

Tejano Music saw its biggest success in the late 1980′s and early 1990′s according to Tejano Music WikiPedia. It was played everywhere; homes, radio, cds, tapes and everywhere available at the time. There plenty of radio stations playing Tejano Music and plenty of eager listeners, waiting to enjoy the soulful sounds of the music. Then, as trends and styles changed, so did the popularity of Tejano Music. For those of us who enjoy Tejano Music, it is still very well alive and usually only available to us via CDs or Tapes. As a DJ, the majority of events that I play at, Tejano Music is very much requested, so social events is the other place where you would hear some good Tejano Songs. A big percentage (approx. 40%) of the parties I did this year (2006) were ones that primarily required the rich texas-style of music. Of course that can be broken down further to the people that wanted “Good Tejano Oldies” and the ones that wanted “The Good Tejano Songs.” If you are reading this and Love the Music, I think you can make out the difference. For the rest I will explain.

“Good Tejano Oldies” Artists include:

“Good Tejano Songs” Artists include:

You can find a list of most Tejano Artists at OndaNet.com.

What is Tejano Music?

Well if by reading the names of the artists above, you still cannot identify tejano music, visit their websites, search for them on Google, Yahoo, or MSN, or Look for some good Tejano Online Radio Stations. Also the Tejano Music WikiPedia is a great source to find out general information about Tejano Music, Tejano History, and Recent Tejano developments. Although, for recent Tejano Development, I will probably be posting more on right here, since there is a lot going on, but it is not publicated on any “over the air” radio stations.

What is this you say about Online Radio Stations?

There are a few options for these. The one I have been listening to, for a long time now, is BnetRadio.com which is based out of Houston Texas. Then there is Batanga.com, Tejano Music on Live365.com, and also some of the “over the air” radio stations provide an online stream (more on that later). I occasionally visit BnetRadio.com and hang out with Anabelle, DJ Bliss, who is on from Monday through Wednesday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
More Tejano Music Sources
Well if you would like to find more information onlie about Tejano Music, here are a few other sources:

More resources to come, this is my last post for the year 2006, I hope to have more information in 2007 to keep you up to date!!!

Have a safe and Happy new Year!!!!

Meebo Me!

I love this little tool, it is an way that my customers can communicate with me and they do not have to release any of their information such as email, phone number, or personal IM and they can chat with me while I’m online. I might even dedicate a few hours of being online so that some customers can chat with me. I have gotten a few comments on this concept and I believe it is the best way for my customers to communicate with me. The hours that I will most likely be online and be able to answer questions are between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. Or, if I am not online, then an email will be the only other option. Thanks for the positive feedback.

The tool is on the left hand side and says “Type here and hit enter to send a private message” Once you click on that, it clears and you can enter your message.
