What would a party be without music? A celebration without music or dance would be lifeless and boring!

This is especially true for children’s parties. Singing, dancing and music are essential elements of a successful kiddie event.

Fortunately, despite the changing times, good old-fashioned nursery rhymes can still be relied on to liven up any party. And with the rise of so many teeny-boppers and kid-oriented singers and bands, the new generation of musicians has some great pieces to offer too.

Here is a summary of just something of the best children’s party songs available today:

1. The Hokey Pokey

Who would have known a song originally written for skiers in Sun Valley, Idaho in the late 1940s would become such a winner with kids?

Repeated action songs are usually a big hit with the boys, and the “Hokey Pokey” is never known to fail to entertain the young guests at a kiddie bash. It’s a perfect icebreaker for your party.

Even adults in attendance at the party would likely enjoy this classical dance routine. So go ahead and invite them to “put your left foot in, put your left foot out, put your left foot in and shake it all”!

2. Start this party

Despite its rock background, this song played by Pink definitely has its place in the list of best kids party songs.

The name says it all. “Get This Party Started” guarantees that every party will start. You can play this tune when all the guests arrive to signal this – what else? – You are about to start the party!

Trust us: once you’ve heard the upbeat and catchy melody, you won’t be surprised why “Get This Party Started” is so popular with party guests, young and old.

3. The name game

The name Game, also known as “The Banana Song”, was written in 1964 by American singer Shirley Ellis with Lincoln Chase as co-songwriter.

Ellis says she based the lyrics on a rhyming game she played as a little girl, with players creating different versions of a particular person’s name. For example, they would sing under the name Tina:

Tina, Tina, Bo-Bina,

Banana-Fana-Fo-Fina,

Fairy-Fi-Mo-Mina

Tina!

The name game is easy to learn even for today’s kids who have never heard the song before and could add a new game to their repertoire that they would love to play after your party as well.

4. Happy birthday

Our list would not be complete without the classic song “Happy Birthday”, the lyrics and melodies of which were first printed in 1912.

The American siblings Patty and Mildred Hill wrote the song in 1893 and based it on the song “Good Morning to All”. Today the song is one of the most popular and widely used children’s birthday songs in the world.

If you think it’s so common that it’s gotten boring, here’s a fun fact: Happy Birthday to You has been translated into over 18 languages! Download them all, play the song in all available translations and watch the interest grow!
