So this raises another question. Is it better to hire a cheap DJ or just use an iPod? A cheap DJ could be disorganized, not show up on time, play the wrong songs, not be able to get people dancing, etc. However, the person running the iPod could be organized, most likely will show up on time, could still play the wrong songs, and will unfortunately not be able to really mix songs together to get people dancing. If you can rent the equipment for $300 vs. pay a cheap DJ $400, it may be best to opt for the DJ so your guests don’t have to play around with the iPod. However, if renting the equipment is $150 and the cheapest DJ you can find is $600 with a budget of say $300, you may be best just going for the iPod.

Hi Mrs. Grasshopper,

Thanks for stopping by commenting on this blog. The last sentence was not clear to me, and I am going to assume you meant that you would recommend the Ipod over the DJ. Am I correct? I would think that there are DJ’s that sit down with you (the bride) and let you chose your own music at your event. I know I do, especially with how diverse my clients can be. If you don’t mind sharing, would you let me know what music was played at your event that a traditional DJ might not have played? Believe me I know there are DJs that say “I play what I play no matter what the bride wants” and I really don’t see it that way. I see it as you hire me with the assumption that I am going to play the music that you and your family and friends want to hear.

I wrote that last article well over a year ago and I stand behind our decision to not hire a traditional dj or band. Yes, we didn’t save much money in going this route because we needed to rent equipment, but we had some of the best music I have heard at a wedding, possibly ever. Which we have to thank a great friend-of-a-friend for handling. I would recommend it to anyone who really cares about the music being played at their wedding.
