Recently, a young couple around my age reached out to me to be the MC for their wedding. Before I dive into how our meeting went and why they felt my service was unique, let me share how they initially contacted me.

Within 10 minutes of receiving their message—a promptness that later proved to be a positive factor—I was on the phone with the bride-to-be, addressing her questions and concerns. I asked her to send over the list, and after reviewing it, I realized I already had about 90% of the songs and was in the process of acquiring the rest. This quick response time and willingness to cater to their needs turned out to be a significant plus.
On February 17, 2006, I received an email from them asking to schedule a meeting to discuss the wedding details in person. They mentioned they were still working through my extensive song list and wanted to know how to book me for their big day.
When the couple arrived for our consultation, we sat down to go over the specifics of their reception. I asked them a few questions to help tailor my services to their preferences. One of my key questions was about their past experiences with other DJs. Their first complaint was how difficult it was to get in touch with other DJs and how slow they were to respond to their concerns.
But what shocked me was their second complaint: other DJ companies they had contacted only allowed them to pick 10 songs from their personal list of over 60. When they asked why, the DJs replied that allowing the couple to choose their music would “tie their hands” and prevent them from reading the crowd. Imagine spending hours carefully selecting songs for your special day, only to be told by the DJ that your choices aren’t welcome. This response struck me as completely unprofessional and dismissive of the couple’s efforts. It’s important to remember that when hiring anyone for your event—whether a DJ, MC, photographer, or videographer—they should prioritize serving you.
I don’t like to speak poorly of my competitors, but I believe it’s essential to share this experience to shed light on what can go wrong. I want to apologize on behalf of the industry to anyone who has had similar experiences with any vendor.
